Customers Slow To Sign Up For New J-Phone Wireless Service

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Japan Telecom Holdings Co.'s J-Phone unit said Friday it signed up 3,500 subscribers in January for its new mobile phone service, "Vodafone Global Standard."

Since its launch Dec. 20, only 4,700 customers have signed up for the VGS service, which offers third-generation wireless services in Japan and international roaming services abroad. J-Phone is aiming for 1 million subscribers to the service by the end of March 2004.

In January, J-Phone added 133,400 subscribers to its current range of services, including VGS, giving it a total of 13.46 million subscribers.

The company added 173,300 subscribers to its "J-Sky" mobile Internet service in January, bringing the J-Sky subscriber base to 11.72 million.

For its photo mail service, J-Phone added 384,900 subscribers in January, giving the service 8.30 million users in all. For its movie mail service, it added 146,300 subscriber, for a total of 1.46 million.

Vodafone Group Plc of the U.K. holds a 66.7% stake in Japan Telecom Holdings.
