Personally, I would guess that Marathon Partners L.P. is trying the old Marvin Davis routine :

Pretend that you are willing to buy some company for some new, higher price, and then hope like h*** that some dolt out there is convinced to make an even higher bid.

I love it when this technique blows up in everyone's face.
