"...Sponsors see other advantages. Stock cars are bigger than Indy cars and have more room for sponsor logos. NASCAR races
also attract a more diverse audience -- about 62 percent men and 38 percent women. In Indy-style racing, men comprise 75 percent of the crowds.

With more women attending, NASCAR is drawing non-traditional sponsors. Beer, cigarette and motor oil companies are still major sponsors, but they have been joined by on-line services (Prodigy), cable TV networks (the Cartoon Network and QVC) and consumer products (Tide detergent).

With an average annual household income of $39,280, NASCAR fans are the kinds of customers Hanna-Barbera Entertainment wants, said Christopher Jones, director of the Turner Broadcasting System division.

"It appeals to the masses while other sports appeal to elites," Jones said. "Our characters are working-class characters. Fred (Flintstone) carries a lunch pail to work every day."..."
