Geof, it is true that Gigabit Ethernet has adopted the Fibre Channel
physical layer but the similarities end there. They are two different
animals. Fibre Channel is a separate ANSI standard that has been
around for several years. Gigabit Ethernet standards are being
hammered out now. Gigabit Ethernet is inferior to Fibre Channel
because it has to be designed to work with 10mps and 100mps Ethernet
which operates using CSMA/CD (carrier sense multiple access collision
detection). That is why Gigabit Ethernet doesn't have Quality of
Service. I could talk all day about the features of each but it
would be easier just to go to the following link which will
answer all your questions. I particularly recommend reading the
link "NETWORK TUTORIAL Fibre Channel, ATM, & Gigabit Ethernet."
