E4 Chooses Mpact Technology for DVD Add-in Cards
E4's Mpact-based DVD Card to Deliver Complete, Low-Cost, Home Theater-Quality DVD Playback on PCs
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 1997--E4 (Elecede Technologies Inc.), and Chromatic Research Inc. today announced that E4 has chosen to use Mpact media processor technology for DVD add-in cards it will sell to its PC OEM customers. E4 is also planning broader product offerings in the future that will take advantage of the software-scalable Mpact media processor.

``We're very excited about offering a DVD solution based on Mpact technology,'' said E4 President and Chief Executive Officer James Hwang. ``Mpact technology helps E4 to provide a high-quality, low-cost, extensible DVD solution to its customers.''

The E4 DVD cards with Mpact technology will offer a complete hardware and software solution for home theater-quality DVD acceleration. Features will include 30 frame-per-second MPEG-2 video (at the maximum DVD rate of 9.8 Mbits/second), full 6-channel Dolby Digital audio decoding, SRS TruSurround audio spatialization for Dolby Digital, an intuitive player application, CSS (Content Scrambling System) interim license for the decryption of copy-protected content, sub-picture decoding, navigation, and more.

``E4 has a thorough understanding of DVD acceleration technology and PC OEMs' needs, and fast time-to-market,'' said Mike Ofstedahl, Chromatic Research Vice President of Sales. ``We're very pleased that E4 has chosen Mpact technology for their DVD solution.''

The Mpact hardware/software approach to DVD playback combines the performance benefits of hardware-based acceleration with the flexibility, scalability and cost benefits of software-based acceleration.

Mpact technology is a breakthrough PC multimedia solution that combines the supercomputer-like Mpact media processor with a PC's own X86/MMX CPU to run mediaware modules (firmware) that affordably deliver high-performance multimedia acceleration. Mpact technology is software-scalable to virtually any combination of DVD, home movie editing, videophone, 2D/3D graphics, audio, telephony, modem and more on the PC.

E4 DVD cards using Mpact media processor technology are expected to be available to PC OEMs in June 1997.
