ownstock, The typical grade school teacher is a passenger with PR functions.
To be capable of the science work that teacher would need a career change to operate and understand many of the experiments. True some experiments are just operated and interpreted later, and so a relatively untrained person could do that kind of work.

I think they wanted to appeal to kids to become astronauts amd get a lot of parents onside. There is zero need to expand the pool of people waho want to be asttronauts. Far more wish to enter than can be accepted.
