For what it is worth. This is what I think. I have been reading about the Islamic fundamentalist movement for l years prior to 911. I began to pay attention when the Shah was ousted from Iran. There is a powerful political movement afoot in the world. The Islamic Fundamentalist with the zeal of crusaders and the conviction that god is on their side declared war on the west. Unfortuantely most of us just didn't know it.

People who know much more than I predicted terrible attacks on the U.S. from this movement. I was not surprised when 911 occurred and frankly I was thankful that it was not a nuclear or biological attack.

911 woke up America that something is wrong. Bush, I think immediately understood the threat posed by the Islamic fundamentalists was real and substantial. The American people were profoundly affected by 911 and instinctively recognize what Bush understands. Bush also realizes that we can fight this battle in America and in Europe or we can fight it at its source. His fear is and was that WMD of some kind get into the hands of a terrorist group and something much worse happens before we solve the problem.

Put this together with Hussein, (who is our sworn enemy, out of his own mouth), who is a real nasty guy and under sanctions from the UN and Bush decides to attack him in part because he is an "easy" target rather than some other less cruel regime. The reasons for the attack are:

1st To obtain a base in the Middle East from which to conduct the war against the Islamic Fundamentalists. He needs this because now our "allies" control our use of military bases and they have in the past limited our activities. He also realizes that some friendly regimes may fail and we could lose our bases in those countries. Remember he told us it would be a long war and I think he not only meant it but that this is just the beginning.

2nd To protect the flow of oil for the US and the world. Because if the Islamic Fundamentalists get control of the world's oil, he understands the catastrophic consequences this will visit on the world.

3rd because Hussein is not only a bad guy, but has a history of making bad decisions. He invades Iran and has a terrible war which cost Iraq millions of lives and much treasure. He then invades Kuwait and it turns out to be a disaster. Is his next bad decision to give WMD to a terrorist organization? At any rate, because he is a bad guy, he is the perfect enemy. If he is eliminated the world is better off, we eliminate a possible threat to us and we further objective 2 and 3.

That is what I think this is all about and why I support the President on this. I do believe that if we do nothing we will wake up one day and find a suitcase nuke has gone off in NY or small pox has been used on our population resulting in millions of deaths or something just as bad.

I realize that many on this thread do not think my concerns are credible. They apparantly think 911 was just an aberration of some sort. I believe it was akin to the attack on Pearl Harbor and we are at war. I think the prez knows this and is trying to apprise the American People. I think the American people support him because they instinctively understand what is going on, even though most were totally unaware of the situation prior to 911 and even though the press has done a terrible job of bringing America up to date. I think this is just politically correct nonsense. We can't say anything bad about a religion even if it is true. Kind of like denying there was ever an inquistion.
