4 UMTS operators complete mobile multimedia tests on networks

Six experimental third-generation (3G) networks offering mobile multimedia services are in operation in Spain today.

Four are owned by the operators Telefonica Moviles, Vodafone, Amena and Xfera and two by equipment makers Ericsson and Alcatel. The four operators have put up these experimental networks to comply with the roll-out obligations imposed on them by their UMTS licenses.

About 1,650 base stations have been installed by them so far with an investment of E500m, whereas the original licenses required a total of 35,000 base stations with investments of E5bn.

Telefonica Moviles has 700 base stations, Vodafone has 800, Amena owns 90 stations and Xfera has 53 stations. All of them currently use equipment from Ericsson, Nortel and Siemens.

Telefonica Moviles is running pilot 3G projects with 15 Spanish telecom colleges and universities by offering them network access for experimental testing. US manufacturer Lucent Technologies is testing its 3G equipment with Moviles. It is rumoured that Nokia and Motorola are also collaborating with Moviles in experimental projects.

Vodafone is testing compatibility of its Spanish UMTS network with its 3G networks in the rest of Europe and in Japan. It commenced tests of mobile services last October in different Spanish provinces with mobile video-mail and video conferencing services.

Amena is testing mainly mobile videoconferencing and mobile high-speed file transfers in Madrid and Andalucia. It is also testing interoperability between equipment from different suppliers and compatibility among GSM, GPRS and UMTS services in its networks. The green field operator Xfera is doing its tests in Madrid and Barcelona.

According to all four operators these projects are part of the normal pre-launch network and equipment testing phase.

The Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology wants regular UMTS services to begin this year.
