They certainly did teach us a lesson during the Vietnam years.

I was part of that "they". But we were opposed to Vietnam for all the wrong reasons, and frankly, student protests were meaningless until returning vets got involved.

There would have been no significant anti-war protests against Vietnam had we had competent leadership at the outset, used overwheming force, had we had a clear commitment as to why we were there and known when the fighting would end.

In this instance, we have all the above. The anti-war protestors against Iraq are, quite simply, people who don't comprehend the issues.

It is very similar to the cries for nuclear non-proliferation in the mid-70s. People who were totally uninformed wanted it just to "stop", but without understanding the reasons it couldn't just stop. It took the strength of one of our greatest presidents, Ronald Reagan, to make serious inroads against nuclear proliferation. He did it with strength, ending the Cold War single-handedly.

Liberals really need to stick with the things they're good at -- performing arts, spending other peoples' money, etc. Foreign/military policy isn't one of them.
