<< IMO the UN could help to make such evil less likely- ... >>

What of the evil that is in the UN?

<< ... but what is needed is consensus and clarity. >>

You have a better chance of getting an elephant to fly, then for getting some of the corrupt and/or backward nations of the UN to behave responsibly.

<< Saddam is who he is, because we chose to use him as a tool,... >>

Saddam was a US ally, at one time, but Saddam wasn't "made in the USA".

<< Further, by not being very clear with Saddam before he attacked Kuwait, we set in motion this whole series of events. >>

We really screwed up there. But, who's to say that Saddam would have been better, or worse, today, regardless of Kuwait?

<< Since we championed his war with Iran, how could he know what "peaceful" guys we were? >>

Which side would you have picked?

<< We send very mixed signals to foreign governments. >>

Not all the time. But, unfortunately, we don't check to see if our politicians are brain dead, before we vote them into office. Of course, this also applies to the rest of the world.
