If the U.S. continues to let things slide (re Israel/Palestine), this is where we're headed: a continuation of the current war; an ever-closer melding of the U.S. war on terrorism with the Israeli colonization of the West Bank; eventually, public opinion throughout the Muslim world leads their governments to a neutral or pro-terrorist position (this is already happening widely, but it will get much worse); Al Queda and similar groups gain a huge Sanctuary, 10-40 countries, where we can't touch them; the U.S. loses the war.

Jacob,

Although you have a habit of a one-sided analysis, I think the process you are attempting to describe is essentially correct. The US needs to be in a position to inflict a settlement on Isreal and Palestine. Once they make it clear that they are willing to that, I doubt it will get to that point. Once he has bullets in both guns, I expect the 'Powell mission' to start and end in the 'Powell plan'. The distaste for Arafat is only a minor issue. Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia are the keys. If they can be made to want peace, Arafat will want peace.

It is a wet dream but a US puppet government in Iraq and a post-revolution US freindly government in Iran would change the balance of power in the region enough to make the inflicted solution possible.
