Den Beste has had several interesting columns on what the French / Germans might do to torpedo the US / British led invasion. One of the ideas he floated was dropping French troops into Iraq prior to the attack in hopes of stopping it just like you said.

Fwiw, it already appears to be headed that way. We have Blix and ElBaradei over in Iraq telling Saddam we can't stop the U.S., so they must let German and French peacekeepers into the county. They'll probably float a few planes in without notifying the U.S. just before the next report is due. Imo, this will halt any attack.

Saddam tosses up a few weapons systems to be dismantled through the next few months while the French and Germans keep there heads in the sand. After a year, Blix and ElBaradei return to Bagdad to declare them weapons-free. Sanctions get lifted and France and Germany get sweetheart oil deals, re-equip Iraq with new weapons, and end up preventing the world from discovering they violated any sanctions in Iraq.

The idea of a tripwire is one I don't think we need to consider until it happens. If the French did fly in some of the Foreign Legion (and that's who they would use, because they're considered expendable and this amounts to "human shields") then about all we could do would be to ignore them and fight anyway.
