Ask Jeeves in new search ad push, Teoma on line

London, February 7 2003, (netimperative)

by Richard Agnew

Question and answer search engine Ask Jeeves UK has launched a new range of paid-for-inclusion services, as the company bids to monetise its newly-integrated search technology, Teoma.

The firm, which is aiming to hit profitability by the end of this year, is aiming to persuade firms to pay for guaranteed inclusion in results provided by Teoma rather than having to wait until their sites are picked up the company's spidering technology.

The first service, Site Submit, costs an annual subscription of £40 for the first URL and £25 for other sites, and is aimed at SMEs and webmasters, allowing them to control which pages are presented by the company's index rather than having their homepage displayed by default.

The second, Index Express, is aimed at larger firms wishing to submit websites in bulk and herd users to specific areas of their sites, such as different pages within retailers' catalogues. It is based on a cost-per-click charging model.

The company is marketing the two services through resellers and is using Nottinghamshire-based Positiontech to conduct fulfillment and payment administration.

The launch follows the recent completion of the testing and integration of Teoma - billed as crucial to the company's bid to compete with Google - into the Ask.co.uk site.

The technology is based on the IBM's 'Hits' algorithm and searches for 'hubs' and 'authorities' around each topic and displays results in three different ways. It was first integrated into the UK site last June, and is presented as a stand-alone product in the US.

Ask Jeeves UK head of business development David Graham said the new products would guarantee inclusion of the subscriber's URL for 12 months and make their URLs' performance more measurable.
