Dan'l, re the Memorex power strip >Should I be worried that the
protection is inadequate?

Probably. I have not looked for comparative data. There has to be
a reason they're giving them away, though. Of course, any electronic equipment has its own noise-controlling circuitry built in. My guess is with the APC strip you not only get better noise rejection, but also you're partly paying for the lifetime equipment protection warranty. The APC Surge Arrest Personal ($30) covers up to $2,500 of damage to connected equipment. It also has a fast acting fuse that would burn out in case of lightning strike. It says right on the box 'most other surge suppressors continue to let power through even after their circuits have been damaged, leaving your equipment exposed to future surges'. So, if lightning should strike twice...

I've had cheapy power strips until now and never had a problem. We have little lightening here - just power drops in winter. But since I got a new $2k computer, I thought I'd spend a little for peace of mind.

Maybe there is a comparison on APC's web site.
