RE Hajj, to Mecca:
Travel to new places,plenty of exercise, a new environment, casting aside old sins, sexual abstinence, a starvation diet, lots of water, refreshing outside air, a supreme being to handle all earthly affairs and provide fixed rules, honoring old traditions
Good for body mind and soul. Can make a new man or women
I read the entire tale and and am astounded to note we have an equivalent right here in the US which produces the same results.
Take a long journey to a distant unfamiliar place with fellow travelers
The sequence of events is all organized
Its a once in a lifetime event lasting many weeks
Men and women are segregated and live in minimal accommodations- even tents
You are surrounded by crowds of people dressed alike
You have a Supreme leader to set the rules
Old traditions abound and tales are renewed
Sexual abstinence
Divorced from all the modern soul rotting luxuries, like daytime TV, short skirts, alcohol, personal cars etc
Its all there and a person will remember it all his(her) life.
