German poll says 58 pct voters favour opposition CDU/CSU, 22 pct back SPD

FRANKFURT (AFX) - Four months after the general elections last year, 58 pct of German voters are now in favour of the opposition CDU/CSU parties, while just 22 pct favour the governing SPD and 10 pct the Green Party, according to a poll by Forschungsgruppe Wahlen for German public television station ZDF.

The SPD fell 3 pct from January and the Greens were unchanged, while the CDU/CSU gained 2 pct and the FDP also won 2 pct to 6 pct, ZDF said.

"If the PDS failed, CDU/CSU currently has an absolute majority," ZDF said.

According to the poll, in which 1,308 voters were questioned, 3 pct of them favoured the left-wing PDS party, which needed 5 pct of votes to gain party seats in the German parliament.
