I would hope that there would be cooperation between countries, and not a new form of imperialism. But I think the immediate problem is for people to realize that we need to explore and develop space as a matter of survival. When we did consider it a matter of survival, during the Cold War, we acted. Now, we seem to think it is some sort of luxury, that we can't afford.

I think the U.S. is in the strongest economic position, and best able to lead the way. But I have no expectation that our politicians have the foresight, or concern, to do what is necessary. Fear and greed are the most reliable motivators; perhaps the discovery of gold on Mars would do the trick.
