Actually I think Iraq remained on very good terms with the USSR and continues to have good relations with Russia. After the Iranian revolutionary regime showed its ability to expel the Iraqi army from its territory and take the fight back to Iraq, the US and the other Arab countries of the region became concerned Iran would conquer Iraq and continue its advance into other countries. Thus the US tilted to Iraq to prevent this. The major thing we gave to Iraq that helped it prevent an Iranian victory was intelligence information. Most of their arms continued to be provided by the USSR and France. The US's number one goal in the region has been to preserve orderly commerce and protect the weak Arab countries of the Gulf - Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, and Oman
