There is no way now the US will get second resolution for military force. Putie-poo floated a trial balloon a few weeks ago probably after Bush assured Russia's oil contracts would remain intact. But after encountering the stiff French/German resistance he had no choice but to reverse his position.

Putin Arrives in France for Iraq Talks
guardian.co.uk

PARIS (AP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in France on Monday for a state visit that will give the two countries a chance to consolidate their shared opposition to a U.S.-led war with Iraq.

Putin was greeted at Paris' Orly airport by President Jacques Chirac before driving up the Champs-Elysees - lined with French and Russian flags - for a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe.

France and Russia, along with Germany, are among the strongest proponents of a peaceful solution to the Iraq crisis, a position that runs counter to the U.S. warning that ``time is running out'' for Baghdad to disarm.

Putin, marking his distance with the tough U.S. position on Saddam, said in an interview aired Sunday night with France-3 television that the single goal is to ensure Iraq has no weapons of mass destruction.

"I am certain that unilateral actions would be a mistake," he added, referring to a possible military strike led by the United States.
