Hindsight is 20/20, and yet some people still can't see the past very clearly. It utterly amazes me when people forget the arguments made against Gulf War I, only to repeat the same arguments today.

I watched a one hour documentary on PBS last night. It recalled the little chronicled facts of the Iraqi war in 1991...not so much in Bush's failure to drive to Bagdhad, but in selfishly urging first the Shites and later the Kurds to raise against Saddam, with promises of American military backing if they did so. And so they did, only to be abandoned to their miserable fate. Victory ticker tape parades through Washington DC and down town NYC, with Powell and Schwarzkopf in an open car waving to adoring crowds, and Bush in his address to the nation declaring that the enemy was defeated, contrasted with graphic images of a Kurd woman clutching her dead child, starving in the mountains of Northern Iraq begging for American help that would not come...and Shite prisoners beaten in the dirt of the Iraqi desert. The latter naturally is war a little closer to what it is really like. Most of us will never experience anything like it, of course.
