"Tim - I wonder how Carl would have Intel avoid the "tech wreck"? Maybe get in the oil business? I would like to avoid it myself next time. Will "

Intel hasn't done badly during the tech wreck. Look at sales and profits, and gross margins. Still very high, all of them. No losses, no bleeding cash the way AMD has been doing. Employment is good...no mass layoffs. And this is during a period of impressive technology/fab/design expansion, what with Pentium 4s beating the pants of the competition, 130 nm transition proceeding apace, several fabs gearing up for 300 mm production, and 90 nm products very far along.

Yes, the stock is below its highs. I attribute this to the herd not fully understanding Intel's position, and to war and 911 jitters, and to a "malaise" that is every bit the equal of Jimmy Carter's famous malaise.

Five years from now when the current malaise has passed, analysts and other stooges will look back and say "We knew 2003 was the bottom."
