Al Re...WW2 was a war in which a clear moral purpose prevailed. WW2 was a war without an alternative.

That is what I used to think. We saved the French from the Germans twice before this century in WWI and WWII. NOw here they are, 50 yrs later, in bed with the Germans again. Im beginning to think they like it.

There was a piece in the WSJ today, asking whether NATO is dead. I tend to partially agree, in that it is at the least, a shot over the bow. NATO has over lived its usefulness, the Warsaw pact is dead, and NATO, which was created expressly to fight the Warsaw pact, doesn't have an enemy anymore, and should now reorganize to reflect the changing world situations. Certainly, a smaller alliance, with fewer countries, with smaller militaries, could meet the reduced threat Russia and China pose today, and get unneeded and unwanted troops out of Germany.. Why tie up so much hardware in an area they are not needed. The new threat is in central asia and Korea, and we need to be flexible enough to meet the threat. NATO, has turned into Frances and Germany's political arm and has ossified into a dead carcas. We should bury the bones.
