This really happened this year in an Atlanta high school football game. This one boy had not missed a practice or a game since ninth grade, however, the boy was retarded, and couldn't quite grasped the finer points of the game, was never allowed to play. This was for his own safety as much as anything.
The high school where the boy suited up for every game, had a terrible record, and the slow boy's last year in high school. The other team's score was so far out in front of the boy's high school, there was no chance of winning.
The coach went to the winning team's coach and explained the boy's situation, and his determination. He asked the coach if the boy could play one play and asked that none of his boys hurt him. The other coach, said he'd do better than that, he'd let the boy score a touch down..
The players on both teams knew what was going to happen. The quarterback passed the ball to the slow boy, who started running in the wrong direction. One of his team mates turned him around, and told him to run as fast as he could.
The word by then had been passed through both schools, so when the boy started running, everyone on both teams stood up and cheered!
The boy scored a touchdown, and thought that he had won the game. This is sportsmanship at it's very best! |
