Rice For Peace

I don't follow this thread. However I thought this might be of interest.

________________________________________________________________

This announcement appeared in my church bulletin. I intend to participate in
this action, and I am encouraging others to participate as well. I hope you
do, and I also hope that you pass this message on to anyone else who would
be receptive to the idea. Thank you!

A grassroots action is in process to reinforce the message that a
pre-emptive attack against Iraq is not the will of the American people. This
action has historic precedent. In the 1950s, the Fellowship of
Reconciliation waged a "Feed Thine Enemy" Campaign to discourage President
Eisenhower from attacking China, which was experiencing a famine.

Reportedly, whenever the Joint Chiefs of Staff recommended use of nuclear
weapons against the Chinese, Eisenhower would ask how many bags of rice had
been received. [Read on for an explanation.] When told they were in the tens
of thousands, he refused to bomb China as long as Americans were telling him
to feed them.

To participate in the revival of this action, please do the following:

Place ½ cup of uncooked rice in a small zip lock plastic bag. Squeeze out
excess air and seal the bag. Wrap it in a piece of paper on which you have
written, "If your enemies are hungry, feed them. Romans 12:20. Please send
this rice to the people of Iraq; do not attack them."

Place the paper and bag of rice in a padded mailing envelope and address it
to: President George Bush, White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW,
Washington, DC 20500. Attach $1.06 in postage. Write "Rice for Peace" on the
outside of the envelope.

Drop this in the mail. It is important to act NOW so that President Bush
gets the letters as soon as possible. After you mail your bag of rice, call
the White House at 202.456.1111 and tell them that your rice is in the mail.

In order for this protest to be effective, there must be hundreds of
thousands of such rice deliveries to the White House. Pray that President
Bush has the wisdom to hear the voice of the American people on this issue.
