WLL user base of pvt telecom firms touches 1.81 lakh in Jan

NEW DELHI: Even as cellular and basic operators continue to fight over mobile services' turf, limited mobility subscriber base of private operators in the country has increased to over 1.81 lakh users in January from 1.69 lakh in the previous month.
According to subscriber figures of Association of Basic Telecom Operators (ABTO), the combined customer base of Bharti Telenet, HFCL Infotel, Hughes, Reliance Telecom, Shyam Telelink and Tata Teleservices across various services — wireline, WLL (fixed) and WLL (mobility) — stood at over 10.02 lakh as on January 31, 2003.
This included 6.42 lakh users of wireline telephony services, 1.78 lakh users of WLL (fixed) and 1.81 lakh users of WLL (M) services, Association of Basic Telecom Operators (ABTO) said.
The subscriber base of Sunil Mittal promoted Bharti stood at 3.34 lakh in January, contributed mainly by its wireline services across five circles of Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Tata Teleservices' user base in January stood at 2.84 lakh, with Andhra Pradesh contributing a maximum 2.45 lakh users, while other circles of Delhi, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu notched over 11,000 subscribers.
In Gujarat, Tata's subscriber strength reached 6,000 users in the first month of the calender year. According to ABTO, HFCL's subscriber base in Punjab stood at 1.14 lakh as on January 2003 comprising 61,144 wireline users, 17,613 WLL (fixed) users and over 35,000 WLL (mobility) customers.
In Rajasthan, Shyam claimed a subscriber base of 59,344 users, of which 26,171 belonged to wireline, over 3,000 from WLL (fixed) and 29,637 from WLL (mobility).
The latest subsciber figures of private basic operators can be seen in the backdrop of December user base of 9.55 lakh, which included 1.69 lakh WLL (mobilty) users.
