Since nobody else has replied directly to your post, let me put in my 0.02 worth - even tho I'm about as technically savvy as a doorpost.

nobody could argue with your premise: msft necessarily will participate in whatever form java eventually takes. what's going on now is a power struggle between a number of players which will decide whether java will proceed on msft's terms (integrated with - kidnapped by - windows), or on sun/oracle's terms - essentially a new os. or something in between. fans of the ultimate fighting championship will love this one: there will be many iterations along the way.
i don't think anybody on this thread makes the mistake of taking msft to be a paper tiger. yet.
