I'm not up to speed on what has been written here, but (FWIW) I'm afraid that if the Franco-German refusal to honor the sole reason for NATO's existence is successful, the defense of any member nation attacked by an outside party, then NATO is dead.

The smaller countries must be wondering what it means for them. If Russia decides to resume building an empire, are Estonia and Latvia safe? Will France and Germany decide that they are unimportant? If Yugoslavia invades Slovenia, will anyone care?

The treaty nations are not supposed to pick and choose their fights in this way - it is a mutual defense pact and Turkey is a member state. There are not levels of membership. They are entitled to the same defense that would be given to France, Germany or the UK.

What a shame. OTOH, maybe it is just a sign that the relics of the Cold War, including the United Nations, have, at last, outlived their usefulness.

Regards.
