Tim,

<<<Trashing Intel management based on not having avoided the Tech Wreck of the past 3 years is silly. (The Tech Wreck was the hangover from the spending spree of the entire industry in 1998-99 (the run-up to Y2K, in my opinion, as companies replaced most of their old PCs.>>>

I agree entirely. Tech cheerleaders (myself included) are however not wrong. Technology is the future. But you have to know what you are doing. Intel management understand technology (meaning silicon, micro processors, manufacturing and R&D process) and the macro issues relating to such, as well as anyone.

Intel managment is not perfect. Outside of their core competency, Intel managment in other areas are guilty of hubris and arrogance. That is quite natural, and it did not do much real damage.

Short of not being able to see into the future (short term), they did as well (managing the crown jewel of our technology establishment) as anyone can reasonably expect.

In terms of how they profited from the tech explosion of the the mid 90's, Intel management were far more responsible and less greedy than most. I have a suspicion that those complaining about mismanagment and greed would have been far worse managers and far more greedy.

Who knows how long this doom and gloom environment will last. If Intel management stays its course and can ride out of this (and nothing crazy happens), Intel will be in a very strong position.

Mary
