| Abortion represents a conflict between two values we hold dear: autonomy, and the sanctity of life. However, the autonomy argument falters on two counts: except in cases of rape or molestation, the person chose to run the risk of pregnancy; and, considering that the state is only asking for nine months of your time to uphold the sanctity of life, you are not required to keep the child, the restriction of liberty is rather mild. Those who are for abortion question whether the life that is inside the womb is human. Doubtless it is during the last trimester, and doubtless even during the second, although viability becomes an issue. Only during the first trimester could the matter even be in play for debate. However, there is a discrete organism which may not resemble a human child, but, nevertheless, if left to itself will soon do so, so that it is a human organism in an early state of development is clear enough. Besides, even if the matter were debatable, unless it could be determined that it was not, the reservation about treating humans, or prospective humans, as trash, without any kind of rationale, pertains. Thus, it does not surprise me in the least that there should be a shift in favor of affirming the value of human life, in reaction against the liberal abortion regime currently prevailing, permitting abortion on demand, at any time, for any cause........ |
