I'm going to take a different track. Yes, the loss of life is terrible. But, these are HIGH RISK Ventures. Anyone sitting on top of tons of explosives to get launched into space knows this. The shuttle record is actually pretty damned good. Yes, one life is too many, but before we dump the whole thing, lets keep it in perspective. of 107 launches, 2 have ended in disaster, thats less than 1 in 50. acceptable losses, no certainly not, but must be considered in the parameters of the venture.
as one friend said to me after the Columbia blew up, "I'm surprised there haven't been more accidents and deaths".
