I have in mind a scenario that compares the current period to the 1970's, where 2002 corresponds to 1970 (both are year 2 of the presidential cycle). Accordingly, 2006 would correspond to 1974, which was numerically the bottom of the 16 year equities bear market (although in inflation adjusted terms that didn't occur until 1982).

The late-1974 bottom in stocks was followed by a 2 year cyclical bull market in stocks which would coincide with the 2 year cyclical gold bear that you describe.

If my scenario plays out according to script, there would be a similar stock bull and gold bear from late 2006 to late 2008 before another 4 years took gold to whatever heights in 2012.
