>>>>Assuming military jets should have scrambled, a USAF general or maybe Rumsfield himself may have decided that that wasn't needed since they knew those planes were US commercial flights originating from US domestic airports. And they had no idea what was coming. They probably thought these were just some more hijackings and they would make things more dangerous for the passengers and crew if USAF jets showed up.<<<<

I have seen these notes about scrambling jets in other posts. I know you are not the one questioning it. However, I do remember some of the events of that day.

The jets that were scrambled arrived over Washington City at around 10 AM. They were prepared to take out another plane that was threatening Washington City. However, some of our fellow citizens did that for them. We thought the planes came from Andrews AFB which is just to the east of Washington City in Maryland. However, we later learned that they were from Langley AFB outside of Norfolk, Va. From what I remember hearing, Langley was only 1 of 4 bases in the U. S. assigned to scramble jets in our defense. I believe that was changed immediately and there are now somewhere around 20 or maybe 24 bases ready to scramble.

There are probably printed accounts of this in the Post from around that day.
