Brad cited the NIH as the source of the figure of 20,000 deaths per year attributed to influenza that I quoted before. The operative word is attributed.

It is true that the influenza virus itself is not the killer but rather a causitive agent that sets the stage for more opportunistic agents or in tandum with preexisting conditions overwhelm the patient.

I cite another source of the lethal aspects of influenza from the World Health Organization:
who.ch

"Major influenza pandemics have occurred at least three times each century, infecting hundreds of millions of people, and killing millions.

The influenza pandemic of 1918 was the largest in recent history, causing 20-40 million deaths worldwide. More recently, the 1957 and 1968 influenza pandemics have killed a million people. During the Hong Kong pandemic of 1968, mortality in the USA alone was estimated at around 30,000 deaths, 51 million Americans were ill and the total economic burden was US$3.9 million.

Neither the "anigentic drift" or the "antigentic shift" impact AVIR's
technology. They will manufacture vaccine for the three viral strains established each year by WHO and NIH. Yes, the vaccine will differ from year to year but every manufacture is on a level playing field in that they must change the formulation also. I fail to see where this is a meaningful issue.

Finally, there are nearly 70 million children that do not currently get influenza vaccinations each year in the USA. It is estimated that one third of these will come down with flu like illnesses each year. If AVIR gets approval for its vaccine I can invision each child getting a spray of vaccine up his/her nose at school. This would nearly double the influenza vaccine market.
