When it involves national security, as this does, is there any other way our president should act, in the best interests of the US as he sees fit.

When some european leaders start comparing Gw to Hitler, what do you think Gw should do; thank them for the praise.
Furthermore, you don't send a jackass like Rumsfield who learned his sense of diplomacy in Miss Piggy's school for wayward boys over to try and make nice nice.
What makes you think Rumsfeld went over there to make nice. You can't play politics when national security is at stake. The europeans want to play politics while Saddam and OBL are getting together with enough power to threaten the world, and you think we should play nice. Get real. The world needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Saddam, when combined with Al qaeda could devastate a lot of the world. We need to put our petty partisian politics aside and face the threat, or face the realization, we could be consumed by the threat.
Is that what you all want.......a major war?
Surely you aren't saying the battle with Iraq would be a major war. Isn't that belittling WWI or WWII. A little 4 day war, with about 30,000 casualties would be a pissing match compared to WWII. If we let OBL combine with Iraq, as he said yesterday, and goes after SA, and 4 or 5 other arab nations, then we will see a major war. OBL announced yesterday the race is on for the control of the middle east. We had better start to take him seriously.
