In the latter days they shaved their coinage, and overtaxed the citizenry - destroying their economy.

The cost of foreign wars were a continuous drain, and helped to tilt the scales towards the decline of Democracy and the rise of Authoritarianism....

I read a most thought-provoking piece last fall (from a South African paper, reprinted in London) that examined the economic parallels between the rise, hegemony, and fall of the Roman Empire, Dutch Empire, British Empire, and speculated about the new 'American Empire' in our so-called 'uni-polar world'.

It gave me a lot to think about.

I doubt we have laid the necessary foundation for a 1,000 years on top like the Romans.
