There's been a slew of lies and distortons forthcoming from the chickenhawk fundamentalists in the White House. I didn't claim that Powell, himself, lied. What I am contending is what analysts are contending, that Powell's assertions in his UN presentation relied on faulty information, political assumptions and technical information that was open to interpretation.

Powell's presentation an emotional one both timed and aimed for the American people, rather than for the rational-thinking members of the UN Security Council, all of whom (with British exception) didn't skip a beat in reasserting their original call for continued inspections. Much has been made of the 16 to 3 NATO tally; but that UN Security Council tally was 13 to 2 against Bush.

So the next day, they cranked up the US in-house propaganda machine with both Bush and Powell following up at a news conference, reasserting the twisted information into the minds of a genuinely concerned public.

The nip in the bud came the day after when the nation went on an increased terror alert. Read: Rally around the flag; support the president and the polling numbers you're citing.
