Well, Bill, on the face of it it'd appear that you're right. And there's substantial justificiation for many folks sharing the same gut feel you've got in the matter, including the Human Rights Watch organization:

But sometimes things happen. Lotsa folks didn't think Nixon should have been reelected, but he was. Sadly, Nixon only worsened after his reelection.

Either way, like Nixon, Kaddafi got elected by a legitimate election process. Africa, which was in line to chair the panel, nominated him as its representative. Of course, Africa always seems to have issues that never seem to get the proper tendering. Perhaps Kaddafi, a former strongman who seems to have reformed, can do this in the interests of the Africans who got behind him.
Me? I don't know. I do know, however, that there are former alcoholics helping current alcoholics; former prisoners who today are working with youth trying to prevent them from meeting a similar fate. I guess were I to make a judgment, it'd be my bet Kaddafi has a better odds of doing good than Nixon. I watch with interest what will happen as a result of his chairmanship. |
