I heard Pollack and Mike O'Hanlon discuss Iraq on Tuesday night, and Steve Hadley discuss it on Wednesday night. The Brookings wonks said what I expected; I essentially agreed with everything, and it was very well done. One interesting tidbit of gossip from another guy in the audience, a buddy who works at the UN, is that in his opinion what the French are doing has little to do with substance and everything to do with running out the clock on the possibility of military action this spring. As for Hadley, Rice's No. 2, he's quite sharp and a bit slippery. Gave a nice, Mother Teresa-esque speech on the record and was willing to sit through a lot of criticism off-the-record. He comes off as a sane rational guy somewhat pained by the bull-in-the-china-shop neocons, but just how different in practice his own preferred policies would be is unclear. Still, I was impressed (even though he's such a classic Wasp, the kind of guy who carries himself like he's wearing underwear a couple of sizes too small). His speech is available here:
