Fuel cost relief unlikely in federal budget
Last Updated Thu, 13 Feb 2003 4:58:49
OTTAWA - The federal finance minister is facing growing pressure to lower federal taxes on gas and heating fuel.

"Canadians are reeling with shock and horror over spiraling, out-of-control energy costs," NDP member of Parliament Pat Martin.

Climbing energy prices were also the big topic of discussion at Wednesday's Liberal caucus meeting.

Some opposition MPs said the Liberal government should slash federal gasoline taxes, now at about 10 cents a litre, with the GST on top of that.

"When will the Liberal government give Canadians some hard-earned relief at the pump by drastically reducing gas taxes?" asked Canadian Alliance finance critic Charlie Penson.

The Liberals' senior minister in the House fielded that question.

"Why doesn't he just wait until Tuesday in the budget to see whether his dreams will come true?" said David Collonette.

The last finance minister, however, didn't have much success with his fuel cost relief.

Paul Martin's $1.3-billion plan to send fuel rebate cheques out before the last election was ridiculed when some were sent to prisoners and dead people.

Sources say the new finance minister, John Manley, won't be tinkering with energy costs in the upcoming budget.
