Even the staunch advocates of the service doubted the timeliness of the suicide. They felt it may have been, too soon.

But isn't that precisely the point? That HE gets to decide when he wants to exit-- Not others with different opinions, different beliefs, different values? Perhaps for this man, the time was exactly right. He was ready. Didn't WANT to begin the decline, have his faculties and abilities erode, saw no reason in waiting for some arbitrary moment that he saw as now but others defined as later.

I have no idea what it "right" and "wrong" in this case, but it is exactly that kind of second guessing and willingness to impose one's own judgment on another regarding such personal issues that disturbs me. (Not that you did this in any way-- I'm speaking generally) This doesn't mean that we don't question and examine and discuss and try to sway, but ultimately, these decisions should be left to individuals as much as possible (imo). I don't believe they are made lightly or quickly for the most part and we err when we assume such a lack of depth on the part of others, thinking only we are capable of wisdom and truth.

I do wonder about allowing someone with a serious condition like schizophrenia to make the decision.

And may I add that you all discuss these issues very politely and thoughtfully here, with depth and reason- this thread is the only other one I read right now regularly.
