Enron used tax code as profit center, senator says By Rex Nutting
A congressional report to be released Thursday shows that Enron (ENRNQ: news,
chart, profile) used its in-house tax division as a "profit center where complexity was
an ally and bending the rules a partner in a search for more paper games," said Sen.
Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. Sen. Max
Baucus, D-Mont, said the report showed that Enron not only engaged in accounting
gimmicks to boost energy prices, but "repeatedly abused the tax code. And they had
help from investment bankers, lawyers and accountants."
