I don't think you have heard Holbrooke's comments on Chirac's latest maneuvers, especially the ones involving NATO. I heard him on Fox two days ago. Holbrooke was really scathing.

Holbrooke has little use for major diplomatic rifts caused by players who are not serious, and the French are not. They do not actually have an opposing policy, they are just trying to puff their own importance.


Didn't see him on what Maureen Dowd calls the official Bush news agency. Love that line.

Holbrooke strikes me as still angry because he had such a difficult time getting cooperation from NATO on the Bosnia, Kosovo stuff. As for the French resistance, none of us really know. It's just as likely caused by the failure of the Bush folk to use "soft power" well such that here is our first serious problem thereby. By their lack of diplomacy, they have so angered huge swaths of the population in a great many, if not all, European countries, that the governmental responses are quite limited.
