I was just having an email exchange with one of those guys this morning, setting up a lunch date in a couple of weeks. the tag line from one of his messages should give you sense of how the situation is viewed by the establishment: "interesting to watch the world fall apart, huh?"

My response to that was this: "yup. it'll be fun to compare notes. actually, just how much things are really falling apart is hard to gauge. I think we're seeing three things come together--the dawning of an age of true unipolarity, an incredibly tactless and obnoxious US administration, and the denouement of a decade-long Iraq crisis. It will be interesting to note what things look like when the dust settles..."
