Derek: I believe you are 100% correct with this thought....

We stopped looking at it as a "criminal" problem and started looking at it as it is: a full blown national security emergency, IMO.
Derek

Before 9-11, all of us read the papers, saw the events, got upset, said so...and hoped the CIA, or FBI or local police could and would handle the problem that we thought "just" was a criminal act. (USS Cole, 1st WTC, Embassy bombings, etc)

After 9-11, most of us FINALLY woke up, began to see that there was a world-wide chain of events that had started happening in earnest. I don't believe that most of us really believed much in conspiracy stories, even if we heard them. In fact, it wasn't a conspiracy. They, by their own omission, had declared WAR on the Americans and on freedom loving countries and people wherever we are.

I believe that modern technology (cell phones, planes, and massive funding etc) has finally made the radicals worldwide believe they could in fact, take advantage of America's goodness, openness, and freedom to implement their evidently long term desire to 'rid the world of Satan,' as they call us...

Most Americans now realize that this has caused, as you noted above, a full blown national emergency.
