Ted, <You understand that the goal of the terrorists is not to blow up our landmarks one by one; instead, its to so freak us out that are way of life begins to falter and our economic well being begins to suffer. And its working slowly but surely.>
That I'll agree with you.<>>>>>>>I mean, people's homes are more threatened by termites than by terrorists. It's like the Y2K scare, times ten.
I agree it is ridiculous but people are scared.......and when people are scared, they don't shop, they don't go out, they don't take trips and they don't plan for the future. Its why the economy is stuck in neutral.
<You all say Bush can't do nada about the economy....I disagree. He could shut his fukking mouth up and start doing the job he has been elected to do.>
Personally, I agree with Greenspan more than Bush, but even Greenspan came out half in support of Bush's economic policies. Too bad no one got that from the liberal press, which had a field day with the other half, the part that Greenspan didn't agree with (deficit spending). Plus the hearings broadcast on CNBC were ridiculously partisan; it's like the congressmen were trying to trap Greenspan into saying something damning against Bush.
Actually, I listened to most of Greenspan's speech as boring as that is......he's mostly down on Bush's eco. program. He had to say something good or he and Bush would be feuding. You've got to stop blaming the mainstream press; its enabling you to avoid looking at the facts. Putting your head in the sand or into a FOX news broadcast will get you no where fast.
<The world is turning against your position. Accept it, admit you were wrong and move on. Its not just a matter of ego or who's right or wrong; its for the well being of this country.>
First, it all depends on what your definition of the "world" is.
There is only one planet.....like I said stop watching FOX and you'll get a broader view.
Second, the majority of Americans disagree with the majority of the "world." And the "world" doesn't give a hoot about America, or at least they put the interests of America subordinate to that of their own home nations.
First, its only a slim majority, the poll was taken right after Powell's speech and the American public can be very fickled. However, when they turn on this issue for real and they will turn, its going to be a hard one.
Third, why do you believe the "world" over Americans? Could it be only because you think the "world" is right and Americans are wrong? Doesn't that make it an issue of who's right or wrong, contrary to what you were saying before?
Most Americans don't understand fully what's going on......yet. Americans have a very bad habit of not paying attention to what their leaders are doing until its almost too late. My sister called yesterday and while we were talking, she went off on the Germans. However, when I explained to her what had transpired since last summer between the Germans and Bush, her opinion changed immediately.
And fourth, if we are to foster a new global community, we'll need lots of room for disagreement. I find it odd that you cannot handle the disagreements on this thread, much less that of the world, and instead you accuse others of having egos.
I can handle disagreement so long as there is some reasonableness and logic to the discussion. The discussions on this thread have become so partisan, its become not about exchanging info back and forth, but rather about whom can best whom.
My position on things is actually closer to someone like Rob S who happens to be a Republican. I want what's best for this country, and that doesn't necessarily mean what's best for the Dem. party. I said yesterday that IMO the Dems have become so cowed by Bush's rhetoric, they have become useless as an opposition party......and I meant it.
Our relationships with our allies...particularly Germany....needs to be mended asap. And every damn Senator who has a brain knows that's true but when the news broke about France and Germany, they started stomping around like they have big balls in their pants. Notice how they chilled on that one real fast........I think someone must have pulled the plug on them.
