Bill, I actually agree with tek on this point.

The people who run foreign affairs for any country are human beings, too. Put yourself in the German or the French Foreign Minister's shoes and have your country referred to by the US Sec. of Defense as the equivalent of Cuba or Libya. I daresay you'd be up in arms as well, no matter how well-balanced you might be.

The whole stupid thing started when Bush miscalculated by making the policy statement as few months ago to the effect that we don't intend to let any country exceed our military capabilities and that we would reserve all rights to act independently.

Everyone on the planet who studies these things knows that Bush simply stated what should have been painfully obvious. These points did not need to be made publicly because they are humiliating to formerly great powers like France and Germany. Moreover, the statement was not a good thing to say when asking for global support to go after Iraq.

These prima donnas are now acting like provoked schoolyard kids. I suspect that the present tone might be different if Bush had not made his pronouncement, but obviously I can't say so for a certainty. I don't think the result would have been any different but the atmosphere probably would be a bit less poisonous.
