Merely using the diplomatic strategies that have worked well in that area for the past 800 years would have been cheaper and more effective. The administration doesn't have a single top level decision maker who is familiar with the history of the area or the culture. No wonder they don't know how to do anything but employ military might. Hey, nobody likes Saddam, not even the Arabs. But this is just plain stupid and reinforces the reality that the administration doesn't know how to run the government.

Talk to almost any career diplomat and you'll see that there are other, better, cheaper alternatives. That's what diplomacy is about--finding a better way to get the job done, other than using armed conflict.
