Reports that Iran and the US have started a direct dialogue on the Iraqi crisis have been overshadowed by Tehran's announcement that it plans to enrich uranium as part of its "civilian" nuclear energy program. The shock admission has heightened fears in Washington that Iran will soon have the capacity to develop nuclear weapons, and is likely to harden the view that US sanctions barring investment, including oil or gas projects, should be maintained .
