Think about it. The pope going to Baghdad and pleading with Bush not to drop the bombs, would be the kind of trigger event that just might tip the scales of balance and turn the world around. How would Muslims view the pope's actions were he to do that? Yes, the pope can be powerful in setting back the recruitment efforts of the terrorists, which are about to see a real boost once Bush starts the war.
However, there's yet another way to fight back against terrorist recruitment. Bush could call a press conference and announce he's resigning. And the reason why he's resigning is because he brought the world to a place too dangerous. That his own self-examination proved to him that his actions were hurtful and not helpful to people, not just Americans. So after calling the war off, announcing his resignation, he could then call for a worldwide discussion of people impacted by poverty, racism, undemocratic regimes, etc. to deal with the problems that bred terrorism. Cheney would do this too, putting Hastert in the presidency.
Were Bush and Cheney to do this, OBL would be dead in the water and would gain nothing down the road. America would then have a new president with little to no baggage and could begin contructing a better world, a better place for all people to live--not just a few!
Lazarus, for some reason, what you want to do has people lining up across the nation, in army-navy stores, hoping to get a gas mask or few and, by now, probably all the duct tape is gone--the poor workmen who need that product. |
