A PC is simply not a commodity. PC Mag does not run articles on which 70ns 16meg ED0 RAM chip is faster on assorted different tasks. Its all in the spec.
They DO RUN innumerable articles on which PC with the same or comparable competing processor are fastest on assorted different tasks......and a wide range of quite different results reported, at a wide range of prices.
And then you can get the one with the 1 gig drive, or 2 or 5gig, with or without CD-Rom, and would you like a Zip or Jazz drive as well?? What size monitor. For smilar $, would you like a no-name monitor one size larger, or one with better color and dot pitch but thats smaller?
Its like saying cars are commodities.
As for Dell being overpriced, well, maybe. Certainly its not cheap. But then again, it may not become any cheaper again. But it might. It sure as hell gonna be a lot higher two years from now. And I'll bet you (well, I already have, back at Dell 45) its going to be a lot higher from here than say Gateway will be from here, in two years. Now as to when it will pull back, or lurch forward, in between, I just don't know. Just don't have those powers. Maybe you do. Best of luck.
As for not being any different than its competitors, well... Yesterday the WSJ reported Dataquest and a competitor slugging it out as to whether Dell's revs. grew mid 50% or mid 60% for 2nd soon to be reported quarter. (You know, the one where Intel said Europe sales were problematic and weak... Nearest competitor was Compaq at low 40s, industry was at 20%. THAT's not different? And bear in mind that unlike Compaq, Dell has been growing at an av. prace of 100% over the past YEAR. And that Compaq is so worried by Dell that it announced a massive overhall in its whole business model, to try to bring it closer to Dell's. 150%++ ROE is not different from its competitors??? Give us a break. |
